Staunton

A beautifully restored property in the heart of "the South's food hot spot," according to Vogue – includes breakfast

Head back to nature and back in time at The Blackburn Inn in Staunton, Virginia. The boutique retreat resides on an 80-acre campus in the scenic Shenandoah Valley, just below the Blue Ridge Mountains, known as a hikers’, bikers’ and equestrians’ paradise. The cuisine at its Second Draft bistro and bar emphasizes locally grown ingredients, along with regional wines, beers and ciders, and offers the option to dine al fresco, in the warmer months. Hotel décor bring the outdoors inside, from hardwood pine flooring to windows that let in the abundant sunshine.

When you’re done exploring and ready to time-travel, simply stick around. Classic moldings, whitewashed wood trim and red brick are among the historic details in the stately main building – formerly part of the Western State Hospital, designed by a protégé of Thomas Jefferson. Among the other timeless amenities are a charming library; a delightful complimentary breakfast with Reunion Bakery pastries, seasonal fruit and artisanal cheeses; an airy art gallery; a gift shop with grab-and-go snacks; and a dessert cart that makes the rounds each night, delivering sweet treats to each abode. Follow the grand spiral staircase to the rooftop cupola for a panoramic view of the property and vibrant downtown Staunton.
