A traditional 16th-century palazzo with themed bedrooms in the heart of Venice – includes breakfast, prosecco and more for longer stays

Getting to the sights is easy in the Castello area of Venice: stroll out over gently arching bridges and along bustling waterside streets, jump aboard a vaporetto bound for the islands in the lagoon, or summon a ravishing gondolier in his traditional stripy uniform for a romantic glide through the canals. From your position on a large square in the center of the city at lavish B&B La Porta d’Oriente, you’re a mere hop from the sights of St Mark’s Square and the famous Rialto Bridge.

Your host, Cinzia, will warmly welcome you to her first-floor abode in a former palazzo that dates back to the 16th century. History shows in its polished wooden floors, high beamed ceilings and elegant fireplaces. Sip rich Italian espresso at breakfast in the laid-back dining room, and dress for dinner in opulent bedrooms draped in silk and stuffed with antiques.

Rise each morning in anticipation of a day’s exploring, made possible with Venice’s muddled streets on your doorstep. Follow in the footsteps of Casanova and take your beloved on a whistle-stop tour of Doge’s palaces and secret gardens, indulge in Venetian cuisine in the many trattorias that line the canals, or simply wander without a plan and discover a different side to the city.
