A historic palace on Venice's picturesque Grand Canal, with a bottle of prosecco and more

Venice's Grand Canal has inspired paintings by some of history's greatest artists, from Canaletto to Guardi, as well as some of the world’s most iconic photographs. It’s a major water-traffic corridor that has long bewitched great authors, from Marco Polo to Henry James, and provided an integral backdrop to classic movies. So, to savor the full Venetian experience, there’s no better place to stay than on the canal itself, where you can breakfast on the banks and sip Negroni cocktails from a rooftop overlooking the city’s Gothic bell towers.

Set in the quiet Dorsoduro district, Hotel Palazzo Stern gives you that canal-front stay you're dreaming of. A boutique property, the palazzo was built in the 20th century, but portions of it date back to the 15th. Packed with antiques, sculptures, crystal chandeliers and sumptuous curtains, the hotel recalls some of the best scenes in literature – an elegant Milly Theale in The Wings of a Dove reclining on her chaise, or Charles Ryder in Brideshead Revisited experiencing the glamorous life of the Marchmain family. On the first floor, you'll find a bar with an outside terrace and views of the Grand Canal, while the lovely rooftop features seating and a Jacuzzi (which can be booked and used for a fee).
